The Library 2.0 has come to an end and I am relieved to have made it through, but also happy to know that I did it! I successfully explored web information sharing and tools and now feel more confident that when others refer to these, I will have at least a clue as to what they are about. Some of the activities I think I will explore more and continue to use them, and others will fade away. My comfort level was challenged and that is probably a good thing, but I will not likely push my privacy boundaries much further. I was impressed with the help available for taking the course – instructors and facilitator were all very accommodating and knowedgeable and I do appreciate all their efforts.

I have subscribed to the CBC podcasts of the 6’oclock news and to The Royal Society Library. Had no problem getting them into my reader and was able to listen to yesterday’s news program, loud and clear from the reader. In the Royal Society podcasts, I opened up a video/audio clip of a lecture being given in the UK on the Voyage of the Beagles. Again the video was good quality and the audio was clear. I can see how people could find this quite addicting – finding things of interest and being able to view or hear them at one’s most convenient time of day or night. There are certainly loads of options available on the web for people’s entertainment or interest needs. I now will at least have a clue what my sons are talking about regarding pods and downloads – they will be so impressed!!
Wow, it took me awhile to figure out how to find people/groups to follow, but finally got four established. Now what do I think about Twitter? Looking through some of the tweets that folks leave behind makes me think they are pretty full of themselves ( I am not referring to the four I chose) and have a lot of time on their hands to relay what they are doing every hour or day that they feel others would want to know. It is probably a good thing one is retricted to 140 characters! However, the ones who actually link you to a site that has information that could be of interest in your work life or home life are more pertinent to me. In a library setting I think one could link patrons to library information through this network. Again though I think time and staff would be the difficulty in keeping it up to date. Certainly social networking is an interesting concept that many people seem to gravitate to these days. It does make one wonder if it all helps us as a society or actually puts up more artificial walls.
What a super neat tool to have in ones belt. I think I will enjoy using this to catalogue my house of books. Getting the cataloguing information is very simple and adding tags will make it easier as time goes on to zero in on different genres and “read again” favourites. I think this might also be a good tool to tell my fellow book club members about and keep track of our past choices. After several years of club reading we don’t always remember what we read and when! I also was impressed with the “Local” tab that gives one links to local book stores and libraries – I discovered some names of bookstores that I had not heard of before in Winnipeg, so I will be visiting them to see what they are like and what they stock on their shelves. When I have time I will take a look at Shelfari too to learn what it offers.
Enjoyed wandering down memory lane when reading all the different song titles that others have added to the spreadsheet. So many oldies, but goodies. I added Moody Manitoba Morning to the mix and since then have not been able to get the song out of my head, which isn’t a bad thing. I think the Google Docs is a great concept – I wish it had been around in the years when I was involved with classroom group assignments – we could have saved so much time and paper with being able to share the writing and editing of one document. I certainly think the process has value for groups of like individuals or coworkers. Next I am going to do activity 2 and see what LibraryThing is all about.
Just to add to my last blog about the bookmark buttons not showing, I do have “Bookmark to delicious” in my links and am able to go into my links and add a bookmark that way, I just cannot seem to get the buttons to display on the toolbar. With getting new computers last week there have been several glitches of things that are established or changed not being retained the next day, so this may be another. But at least using the Links, offers a shortcut and works so I am fine with that option.
Now into week 6 and trying to catch up to the course material and assignment. I set up a del.icio.us account, but struggled with the buttons being added to my browser toolbar. Yesterday, I contacted Mike, my group’s facilitator and he helped get that established. However, today they do not show on the toolbar anywhere I have looked. But I am not going to worry about doing it all again ; I will just add bookmarks the more extended way of copying urls into the box in my account. So what do I think of Social bookmarking? Well, I did experiment with looking for my topic of horseback trailriding in western Canada via delicious and Google. The outcome is that Google has many more hits, but many were not relevant, whereas the delicious one found my keywords much more concisely. Delicious found about 292 bookmarks and I found a lot of other tag keywords others used that I could utilize in the future. I can see that the social bookmark site would streamline saving time in searching again for one’s favourites or best websites and that having tags facilitates finding them again. I am still trying to figure out how to edit tags once they are in place. For instance, adding the UML_Library 2.0 tag to any of my already established tags. Whether I personally would use delicious in the future to share bookmarks with others is debatable, though I can see how others could find it beneficial to do that with their bookmarks. It is interesting to learn about the concept and understand better what people are talking about when referring to social bookmarking.
I learned how to add some content to the test Wiki page today under the summer activities. It is interesting to read some of the information that has been added by others and of course one always enjoys looking for good eating places! I think I understand the concept of the sharing of information on one site and letting others add or change the information, but I cannot help but wonder how one finds the time to be monitoring and reading everything that is in blogs and wikis. I find it hard to find the time to read just the weekly assignment information and a few examples of what others have added. I can see how a Wiki could be used in libraries as a communication tool for staff, for example if a committee was working on a project. If it was to be used between patrons and staff, I would think there would have to be a dedicated staff member with dedicated time to take on the task of keeping everything current and monitoring the feedback.
The RSS feeds that I am learning about are certainly overwhelming. There is so much on the web, and while I understand the concept of the reader looking for what I am interested in and pulling it together, there still seems to be a lot of reading and wading through information to find the nuggets that will perhaps be useful to me in the future. I do not think I am getting it to filter as well as I would think it should, but will keep trying with it when I have time to browse through more of the possible web feeds and what they produce.
Today is the first day of having a blog of my very own! A place to express myself, however I wish. It will be a learning experience in every sense.
